On Race and Racism
The articles included in this section are written by 3-year students on the module On Race and Racism. They chose the topics themselves, and then worked individually and in teams to finalise the articles. Throughout the semester, we engaged in difficult but necessary conversations about race and racism. We looked at the impact of racism on our lives, work and teaching, and about how we can overcome it. And one of the questions we asked ourselves was: Can racism be educated away? We firmly believe so!
One of the aims was to enhance the students' learning and my own teaching experience, while raising awareness about current challenges. Education provides access to answers but building a sense of belonging in the classroom is also about commitment, about coming together to ask what we can do for ourselves and what we can do for others. Working with the students on this project convinced me once again of the veracity of the old saying: if knowledge is power, then education holds the key to that power. Obstacles exist, and will continue to exist, but they do not have to overwhelm us. Our students are prepared to face them.
